Depending on the weapons used, different traditions developed: today, a distinction is made between noise customs and festive shooting, as well as between Prangerschützen (1,200 members in Upper Austria), Stahel or crossbow shooters (500 members in Upper Austria), Bürgergarden (1,500 members in Upper Austria) and Schützenkompanien. The Prangerschützen are not military marksmen, but festive marksmen. Therefore, the Stutzen is not a firearm, but a traditional implement that is handmade. Each Stutzen is a precious unique piece, some of which have been crafted by gunsmiths into true works of art with magnificent carvings.
We, the Prangerschützen of Upper Austria, keep this tradition alive. For centuries, festive shooting has been an integral part of Upper Austrian culture. With their active club life, our numerous members still contribute to the successful organisation of both church and secular celebrations.
