NRW Minister Nathanael Liminski and Minister Ina Scharrenbach presented the ‘European Active Municipality’ award to five municipalities and the ‘European Active Civil Society’ award to two other stakeholders at the State Chancellery in Düsseldorf, including the European Community of Historical Marksmen in Dormagen, whose Secretary General Peter-Olaf Hoffmann and Regional Secretary Friedhelm Pauen accepted the award on behalf of the organisation.
The state government has been honouring municipal stakeholders for their exemplary European commitment since 2013.
Secretary General Peter-Olaf Hoffmann was ‘proud of this award, it is something special’.
Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the European Riflemen have rendered outstanding services in support of the Ukrainian population. Under Hoffmann’s direction, a partner organisation of the Ukrainian Cossacks was established in cooperation with other partner organisations in Poland (Poznan, Krakow). The support network was established within a few days on the basis of many years of contact, and since then aid convoys have been travelling regularly from Dormagen to Poland, from where the materials are transported to the Ukraine. The entire administration of the transports is in the hands of volunteers. The shooters quickly received support from the town, private individuals and the community foundation. Money comes in through donations, but also from the sale of solidarity buttons at shooting festivals in NRW (proceeds to date 250,000 euros). Hoffmann said that this aid also demonstrates the ‘special solidarity of the people of Dormagen’. He emphasised that they would continue ‘as long as it is necessary.
